I love sharing children's literature with my students! In Kindergarten and 1st grade, I include "Book Time" in virtually every lesson. A favorite series amongst my Kinder and firsts is There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a (fly, bat, leaf, snowflake, you name it!) This week's book is There Was an Old Monster. I picked it up at the book fair a couple of years ago. There is a FREE downloadable song that goes with it! You can download it at the Scholastic website HERE. The song is very adaptable for various grade levels. It would be really cool to include World Music Drumming in this lesson. I get a lot of, "AGAIN! AGAIN!" when I use this book in class.
Speaking of book fairs...We just had one! Here is the list of books that I picked up:
I am Small - Emma Dodd
ABC Kids - Basher
If You're Happy and You Know It (With CD) - Jan Omerod
Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Waking Up? - Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson
The Three Billy Goats Fluff - Rachael Mortimer
Ten Little Caterpillars - Bill Martin Jr.
Pete the Cat Saves Christmas (free downloadable song) - James Dean and Eric Litwin (There were more Pete the Cat books, but I already have those...)
Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (With CD) - Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle
Monster Mash - David Catrow
Some other favorites of mine that I remember seeing are:
Interrupting Chicken - David Ezra Stein
Puff the Magic Dragon - Peter Yarrow and Lenny Lipton
If you are a parent who is looking to purchase books for your child or a music teacher who is looking for ideas, I hope you will give those books a try! What books do YOUR kiddos love?
